Just Clean It: Cleaning and disinfecting compounding areas
Surfaces in compounding areas are a major source of microbial contamination of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs).Therefore, scrupulous attention must be paid to cleaning and disinfection.
Cleaningis a process that results in the removal of contaminants from objects and surfaces using water, detergents, surfactants, solvents, and/or other chemicals.
Disinfectionis a process of destroying microorganisms. It must be done for areas to be sterile.
Cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces in sterile compounding areas must occur on a regular basis. It must be repeated when spills occur!when surfaces, floors, and walls are visibly soiled!and when microbial contamination in known to have been, or is suspected of having been introduced into the compounding areas.
